If your most recent speeding ticket has put your driving privileges at risk. the judge may require you to have SR22 coverage with your auto insurance. SR22 certification allows you to continue driving even if you've had a DUI or multiple speeding tickets. There are some things you need to know about the coverage though. The first thing you should know is that SR22 coverage is not difficult to obtain. An insurance agent who specializes in SR22 insurance coverage will be able to help you fill out the necessary paperwork so that you can continue driving. While you have your SR22 coverage, you'll be able to operate your motor vehicle lawfully. Here are three additional things you need to know about your SR22 coverage.

It's Not Overly Expensive

If the court has ordered you to obtain SR22 certification before you can drive again, you're probably concerned about the impact it will have on your budget. You might be worried that it will be prohibitively expensive. Luckily, that's not the case. Your SR22 coverage will only require a one-time filing fee. It's important to note that your insurance company may raise your rates once you file your SR22. However, if you continue to operate your motor vehicle safely, your insurance rates should decrease over time.

It's Not an Actual Insurance

You might think that SR22 certification is an insurance policy. However, it's actually a certificate that the insurance company provides you to certify that you have insurance coverage for the vehicle you'll be driving. To obtain the certification, you'll need to contact your insurance company and ask that the SR22 certification be included with your current policy. If you don't have an active insurance policy at the time of your driving conviction, you'll need to obtain insurance coverage that includes the SR22 certificate.

You Won't Need the Coverage Indefinitely

If you're worried that you'll need SR22 certification forever, don't be. Your SR22 requirement will come with a time limit. If you avoid traffic violations, and you maintain your SR22 coverage for the entire time period, your SR22 requirement will be removed.  The judge will use your particular charges, and your previous driving record, will determine how long you're required to carry an SR22 certificate. In most states, the time requirement is usually a minimum of three years. When your SR22 term limit has been reached, you may contact your insurance company to have the certification removed.

If you have several speeding tickets, or a DUI, the judge may have ordered you to provide SR22 certification before you can have your driving privileges restored. The information provided here will help you understand your SR22 and how it will impact your driving privileges.
